Gordon Brown is being constantly briefed on developments via channels set up by Madeleine's dad Gerry, it was revealed last night.

Sources say the Prime Minister - who has offered the McCanns his support by phone in the past - has "a personal interest" in the case.

He could be crucial in fending off any charges, believes Gerry - whose legal team pass all the latest information to No 10.

One of Mr Brown's closest aides also receives regular private briefings and gets bulletins from the British police and Home Secretary.

A McCann family member said: "While there's been no personal contact since Gerry and Kate were given suspect status, he wants the PM to keep up with their plight."

hugely disappointing this.

"Why did the British crown offer to shield the McCanns and connect them up with political and religious leaders?"

shame on Gordon.

With McGuinness replaced by Mitchell - paid for not by the Find Madeleine Fund but by unnamed 'financial backers'

shame on yu-know-who.

"A slick, controlled, managed campaign frustrates and irritates those with a more investigative thirst for the story.

"They [the McCanns] have appeared to have been marketing their own tragedy"."

quite.
