Hot water for Big Brother

As one commenter has alluded to the Big Brother controversy, I’ll throw in my comments. This is the very first series of Big Brother I have watched more than 10-minutes of. I probably catch about half-an-hour a week, but I see enough to know what the hell is going on (yes, it’s that primitive).

(My reasons for viewing BB are here. My opinions of the viewers are here. My apology for my hypocrisy is here.)

The controversy, of course, is that some viewers have made accusations that several of the contestants have been racist towards Indian actress Shilpa Shetty. Not Dirk Benedict I may add, who like this blogger, is rather spell-bound by the sultry Bollywood star.

I’m not sure it’s overtly racist, just that a trio of chavvish troglodytes (Jade Goody, Teddy Sheringham’s WAG Danielle, and the blond bit who used to front S Club 7) have basically ganged up on Shilpa because, unlike them, she’s a gold-platted A-Lister. Indeed Shilpa has starred in over fifty films; unlike Jade, who we all know, is just a “minger.”

The only thing in my opinion the other girls have shown is that women can be bitches and that each one of them is a moron. Novelist Hari Kunzru disagrees, he thinks that there were indeed classic instances of racism - and I respect Kunzru, so maybe I’m wrong. I just can’t help but think that the dynamic of an Indian film star cooped up with the likes of Goody, was always going to go tits-up.

thank you for this blog entry aaron. My views are: the the english 3sum are part of the underclass. i.e they are either childish or have no class. Having said that the WAG is a tweetie. Goodie I accept as she speaks from the heart. the other women needs to be chucked out. what a bore she.

re the (supposed) racism. given that feelings are running (very) high. Goodies even claims to have a sort of nightmare with not only her Shilpa present but her entire bloody (extended) family. ppl are going to make fun of others. Goodie who by the way apparently has the best selling perfume to her name in the UK does not feel to wish demeaned by class, and this is a very reasonable wish on her part. Having said that S is more reserved and hence suspect. Overall no issue, the sirtuation is the inevitable (in this instance) result of caged circumstances.

    The (immediate) beneficiaries are :
    a) CH4
    b) The BB brand
    c) JG
    d) the delicious woman whose soul mate was a prat - sadly no more.

The (not so immediate) other beneficiaries are:

    are the British Indian coomunity.
given that the establishment have rallied to their support.

overall a storm-in-a teacup. please to see though the assertive ethnics standing for their rights. and good luck to ‘em.

jade goody quite literally has as much brains as a piece of grass so knows no better, similarly with that hoe sheringham is funding….jo however should know better.

this is not necessarily intentional racism, it is slagging, and because they have nothing to slag her on, they slag what she is, rather than who she is…which is a lady with more class and intelligence in a veruca than those three bints could have in their combined bodies.

Big Brother row dominates Brown visit
A controversy over alleged racist bullying of a Bollywood actress on reality television show Big Brother is overshadowing a high-profile visit to India by Gordon Brown

it is not racism. It is a class struggle - the dynamic between Shelpa Sethi & Jade Goody. and neither is budging. haha.

Some interesting points. I especially like comment #4. The public outcry at the insolent attitudes towards Shilpa does convey healthy anti-racist attitudes. I don’t think Brown has much to worry about; Anglo-Indian relation are strong, and there is no reason why the adept handling of this incident can’t improve them further.

I’m sure there are morons in India - it’s just that we Brits put ours on the TV.

    no.
    there are no morons.
    in India.

I am so tempted to say.
BEWARE. Jade’s perfume is a best seller. The lady is no fool.

    the public outcry.

yes. I would love to know who the public is. I bet you there are all (British) Indians.

    morons in india.

effigies in India are being burnt.
I believe that this is rent-a-bob in action.

what is emerging and THAT bit is the most interesting. is that the Indian community can be split into three. those who are so integrated that they think Jade Goody is so below them that she aint worth the bother.

Then there is the (older) generation, and there hangers on, who I expect are the complainants.

and then there are the Indians (in India). They are finding their feet on the world stage. and hence their reaction.

Today, she is a slimmer (by two stone), glossier, brunette, with a 19-year-old boyfriend, two sons aged three and two from a previous relationship, her own perfume, two fitness videos, a property portfolio, and a fortune in the bank from interviews and photoshoots with magazines and highly lucrative appear-ances in other reality TV shows like What Jade Did Next and Celebrity Driving School.

She ousted Victoria Beckham from the cover of celebrity-obsessed Heat magazine, struck up an unlikely friendship with Kate Moss (Jade, according to showbiz sources, has been invited to several parties at the supermodel’s home), and was recognised by Samuel L Jackson when the two found themselves on the same plane.

Jade has the same agent as Tess Daly, Davina McCall, Sadie Frost and Mariella Frostrup. It’s also rumoured that she’s been approached by Hollywood’s powerful William Morris Agency, which represents stars such Scarlett Johansson and Emma Thompson. There must be times, to borrow a cliche, when Jade Goody has to pinch herself.

How much is she worth? Some reports suggest she has made more than £4million in the past few years; however, someone who works with her told us the figure was nearer £2 million.
