Journalist watches execution with Sunni insurgents

Ghaith Abdul-Ahad watches Saddam’s execution with Sunni mujahideens - he writes in The Guardian: -

‘They killed him, is that possible?’ Abu Hamza, a muscled Sunni insurgent in his early thirties asked in disbelief. ‘I still can’t believe it,’ he continued, resting his head on his palm. The TV channel repeated the scenes many times, cut before the actual execution moment and followed by television scenes of jubilant Shia men and boys dancing, accompanied by patriotic songs. ‘Those Shia, they killed him on the day of the Eid just to humiliate us,’ said Abu Hamza.

Abu A’isha, a mid-level commander of an insurgency group in west Baghdad, short, stout, in his forties and dressed in a blue tracksuit, was more calm. ‘It’s better for the jihad,’ he explained. ‘Every time the mujahideen do an operation they say it’s the people of Saddam. Where is Saddam now? Let’s see if his death will affect the jihad. Of course it won’t.’ He added: ‘The resistance is led by the Islamists, and we don’t love Saddam. It’s good that he is out of the picture. Now things will be clearer.

Bush plays his final hand in Iraq

saddam

From the BBC: -

Iraqi TV said the execution took place just before 0600 local time (0300GMT). A representative of the prime minister and a Sunni Muslim cleric were present.

Two co-defendants, Saddam Hussein’s half-brother and a former chief judge, are to be executed at a later date.

All three were sentenced to death by an Iraqi court on 5 November after a year-long trial over the 1982 killings of 148 Shias in the town of Dujail.

A Nighy in New York

Café Girl has been to New York for Christmas and caught her muse, Bill Nighy, in a play he is starring in. Imagine that? Christmas in New York. Reminds me of a song…

Bill Nighy is the nicest and most down to earth gentleman on this planet. And I am not so sure I can sleep tonight either.

He probably is.

John Edwards to run for President

John Kerry’s ’04 presidential running mate, John Edwards, has announced his intention to stand for the Democrat nomination again. Edwards, who flattered to deceive in his televised debates with incumbent VP Dick Cheney, will be considered an outsider running against Democrat titans Hillary Clinton, former Virginia State Governor Mark Warner, and American politics’ rising star, Barack Obama. We should also not rule out a late move by Al Gore, but increasingly, this looks unlikely.

Read Mr. Zhisou’s profile of Edwards HERE.

Edwards could yet become the darling of the blogosphere, but this blog doubts he will be able to survive the Tsunami of money the Clinton team will throw at the campaign, or that Edwards - even with his 2000 People Magazine “sexiest politician alive” accolade - will be able to match the raw panty-moistening charisma of Obama.

Coffee’s the trick

Using Coffee To Trick Your Brain
I usually work on multiple projects at the same time, and whenever a new project comes along, I find it really difficult to actually get started. Once I’ve begun making progress, I’m able to move smoothly without any problems. It’s the getting started that’s really difficult, especially if it’s something I’m not really interested in. At an intellectual level I know I have to get started, but I’m not able to summon up the motivation to begin.

For the last few months, the most reliable technique I’ve found to help me get started is to take the work to a coffee shop and begin while sipping coffee. I’ve found that this allows me to get excited about whatever is in front of me at that time. My brain appears to misattribute the physiological response to coffee as excitement about whatever I’m working on at that time.

Of course, once I’ve started on the project, I get into a state where I’m chugging along well after the coffee has worn off. The interesting thing is that the excitement remains.

When I was a student I couldn’t afford coffee shops.

Blue Thursday

Remind me not to get ill on Thursdays.

The irregular quote of the day

The future is every politician’s favourite territory. Nothing has happened there yet, so there’s nothing they can be blamed for. It can be full of hope and new opportunity, and all those feelgood things they love to talk about. We fall for it every time. All successful political campaigns focus firmly on the future and what can credibly be promised. We voters are an ungrateful lot. We bank and quickly forget any benefits that have come our way and are far more likely to recall past mistakes and misjudgments. So the politicians will change the subject, change the tense, and start looking forward.

Spinmeister general, Lance Price, explains how Gordon Brown can emerge from Blair’s shadow in today’s Guardian.
