From Kommersant
“Last night, a special operation was carried out in Ingushetia, during which Shamil Basaev and a large number of his bandits, who had ordered and carried out terrorist acts in Ingushetia, were killed,†Patrushev said. He stated that the special operation was made possible thanks to operational positions on the borders with those countries where the militants collected weapons. The militants were planning “to apply political pressure on the Russian leadership during the G8 summit,†Patrushev said.
“That is the punishment they deserved for our children in Beslan, for Budennovsk and for all the terrorist acts they committed,†the president replied. He ordered awards to be issued to all who took part in the operation to eliminate the bandits.
This news was welcomed, with some degree of scepticism, by Mrs tyger.

I remember how the Russian authorities dealt with the situation “inside” that theatre. Not giving in to blackmail is one thing, making it for the blackmail to be effective in future occasions is another. To fight terrorism with terrorism does not seem to me to be the right procedure in a law-ruled state.
I wonder how Russians would react in a recurrence, which they would be more scared of: terrorists or their own state?
