So we’re sending more troops out to Afghanistan… anyone else feel like they’ve been had?
What really pisses me off is that, while defending their catastrophic handling of Iraq, the Neocons have always pointed to Afghanistan as evidence of their aptitude. Why exactly was Afghanistan a success?
Wasn’t the key objective the capture of Osama Bin Laden? Well he was never caught or killed, and neither was Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar. And have we secured the area? Well if the latest British troop casualties are any indication, it’s clear we haven’t. Reports also suggest that reconstruction in the country is dangerously behind, providing the environment for dissatisfaction and resentment. Yeah, really good going. Medals all round methinks.
I’m proud at least that we Brits have the constitution to send more troops to he region. Iraq has been crying out for additional forces for 3-years, but Bush has always been too politically sensitive to actually put the adequate resources into the country to effectively put down the insurgency. Warlite, that’s the Rumsfeld way.
Update:
May I add that I do support the ongoing peacekeeping in Afghanistan, and I did support the removal of the Taliban (which regardless of 9/11, was a horrendous regime whose treatment of women was/is an abhorrence). I just demand that if we get involved in foreign states, we do it properly, and put the necessary forces on the ground to avoid the continued suffering of innocent civilians.

I await the inevitable withdrawal from both Afghanistan and Iraq with a hope that they are both achieved with as few further casualties as possible. The Politicians who contrived to bring about these catastrophes should then be made to give account. They have happily marched into possibly the highest concentration of the culturally Warlike on Earth. Afghans have fought throughout their entire History against some of Histories big hitters from Alexander to the Red Army, and they all left. They all tried to leave a mark but the dust of that place eventually blows all away.
