One of the biggest stories in the US blogosphere has been Stephen Colbert’s keynote speech at The White House Correspondents Dinner. The event is a sort of get together for the President, his staff, and the shallow bunch of hacks who attend the daily WH Press Briefings (although many more of the DC shape-shifters attend also).
Colbert, if you don’t know, presents The Colbert Report, on Comedy Central over in the States. The show is a spin-off from the excellent Daily Show, which you can get over here in ‘ol Blighty, on the digital channel More4. Both shows are a parody of the main news, often referred to as ‘fake news,’ and are both, a form of detournement.
In the speech Colbert plays up the rightwing journo to a tee, but his false praise is seething with anti-Bush bile, who hilariously, is only a couple of seats away. Needless to say the Democratic bloggers are in a frenzy, and Colbert has already slipped into legend….
